Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store
-
Japan's first department store
-
Founded in 1673 in the Edo period as the draper's shop Echigoya, the store was the first in Japan to sell goods with a price tag, which is the common way to do things now. In 1904, Mitsukoshi issued the Department Store Declaration, which marked the start of department stores in Japan. In 2016, the Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Building was designated a national important cultural property.
