Ningyocho New Year Decoration Market
A winter tradition of street booths selling New Year decorations
Ningyocho is decorated with New Year decorations such as shimenawa at the end of the year and has become an area-wide tradition. Shimenawa is used to fence out the old year's misfortunes and shut out the evils around us. On New Years, in order to purify our homes and welcome Toshigami (god of the incoming year), we offer Kagami mochi at the home altar, place Kadomatsu on the front door, and bind Shimenawa.
