Hie Sanno Festival Shitamachi Rengo Dogyo
The Hie Sanno Festival is the pride of Japanese festivals!
This stylish and energetic Edo festival involves more than ten thousand shrine bearers crowding into what was the center of Edo-period Tokyo. With a lead-in of 100 chanting tobigashira ("fireman bosses"), 17 mikoshi (portable shrines) head toward Nihonbashi, before being presented up to heaven in the middle of the bridge at the road origin marker of Japan. The energy of the festival is maintained into the finale, with a number of the mikoshi heading into the entrance of Takashimaya, an important cultural building.
